Lindiwe – The Nursery Cat

The day was the 16th of December, 2011.  We had heard about a closing down sale at a nursery near Lanseria and were quite excited with the prospect of filling up our garden with cheap plants!  The sale promised at least 50% discount, and with both my husband and I being from Durban, we were keen to snap up as many bargains as possible.

We arrived hot and sweaty (30 degrees plus in the shade!) and proceeded to fill up our trolley with everything from Bouganvilla’s to Agapanthas.  Our trolley was soon overflowing and we made our way to the till to pay.  As I looked around while they calculated our purchases (this took a while as we had a HUGE amount of stuff!) I spotted a cat curled up on a stone near the pay-point.  Of course with me being an animal-lover, I rushed up to touch it.  She was beautiful and looked so peaceful curled up on that rock.  The staff told us that her name was “Lindiwe” which means special gift and that she was old and did not like people much.  Can’t say that I blamed her for that!  I asked whether they would be taking Lindiwe with them and they said that they were going to put her down!  I was mortified and quickly asked my husband whether we could take her.  Byron told the owners that we would be back to fetch her later that afternoon.

We rushed home, deposited the plants all over the garden and then jumped in the bakkie to head back to fetch our Lindiwe.

When we arrived back at the nursery, Lindiwe was nowhere in sight.  All the staff looked for her and we had her cage ready for her.  Once they had found her and put her safely in her temporary home, we then had to buy the rock that she had looked so comfy on!  This was not cheap at R350 but worth every cent.  She was perfectly behaved on the way home and has settled in beautifully to our mad household.

It really is hard to believe that she was going to be euthanased because they thought she was old (13) and was not fond of people.  I am so glad we have proven them wrong and we are thrilled she is now part of our animal family!

  1. So happy for Lindiwe to have been found and brought home to be part of your family now! She is one beautiful kitty, no doubt. 🙂
